Do you know what kind of berries these are? 

– Oh, look, koumaria, – says Panagiotis. Flowers, yellow, red berries, a little fluffy. What a beauty in the forest! I choose, I have nowhere to put them, I use a mask 😊.
*** Strawberry  or otherwise strawberry tree. I think it is grown  simply as a forest tree. The Greeks call this tree koumaria, and the fruit koumara. That is what I will call it here. So that when you come, you will remember what to look for 😊.
Koumaria has been known since ancient times. The Roman naturalist, historian, and philosopher Pliny the Elder gave the tree its Latin name – Arbutus unedo. Unedo comes from the Latin word combination “I eat only one” (unum edo). It is an evergreen shrub, the height of which sometimes reaches 3 meters. A very hardy plant, even after a fire, new shoots quickly appear. Koumaria is one of the few plants that can bloom and at the same time delight with ripe fruits.
Koumaria has been known for its healing properties since ancient times. According to Greek mythology, the goddess Artemis treated sick children by holding a branch of koumaria in her hands. Hippocrates used koumaria (fruits) to treat thrombophlebitis (inflammation of the veins when blood clots form).
Koumaria is used in folk medicine as an antiseptic, diuretic (removing fluid from the body) and laxative, and koumaria leaves, in addition to the above, are used to treat hypertension and diabetes. It is a very good source of vitamin C and fiber.

 
 

What are the uses of koumari, its berries and its flowers, leaves?
Fresh leaves and shoots stimulate urination. Its leaves are used for diarrhea, urination, dysuria, cystitis, urethritis, dysentery, as well as for inflammation of the intestines, kidneys and bladder.
koumari leaves are collected throughout the year, recommended for hemoptysis, hematuria and uterine bleeding.
Gargling with a decoction of the leaves helps with a sore throat.
The root has been used to treat poor blood circulation and high blood pressure.
The fruits (koumari) are considered natural diuretics (help to remove excess fluid from the body), and are also used as a medicine for diarrhea. It is also an aid in the fight against chronic bronchitis, chronic bladder and kidney diseases.
koumari raki, mixed with sugar and cinnamon, is used as a drink for flu or fever.
And of course, jams, jellies, alcoholic beverages…
Kumaryas should be eaten when they are fully ripe (they should be brown and soft). Unripe ones are tasteless and hard. And overripe fruits turn sour – after eating ripe fruits, you feel dizzy and drunk.
Kumarya is propagated by seeds that fall from the fruits to the ground. It usually grows in sunny or semi-shaded places, always protected from strong winds.

švieži lapai ir ūgliai skatina šlapimą. Jo lapai vartojami nuo viduriavimo, šlapinimosi, dizurijos, cistito, uretrito, dizenterijos, o taip pat esant žarnyno, inkstų ir šlapimo pūslės uždegimams.
koumarjos lapai renkami ištisus metus, rekomenduojami nuo hemoptizės, hematurijos ir kraujavimo iš gimdos.
Gargaliuojant lapų nuovirą, padeda nuo gerklės skausmo.
šaknis buvo naudojama blogai kraujotakai ir aukštam kraujospūdžiui gydyti.
vaisiai (koumarai) laikomi natūraliais diuretikais (padeda pašalinti skysčiaus perteklių iš organizmo), taip pat naudojami kaip vaistai nuo viduriavimo. Tai pat pagalbininkas kovojant su lėtiniu bronchitu, lėtinių šlapimo pūslės ir inkstų ligomis.
Koumarų raki, sumaišytas su cukrumi ir cinamonu, vartojamas kaip gėrimas sergant gripu arba karščiuojant.
Na ir aišku, uogienės, džemai, alkoholiniai gėrimai…
Kumarjus reikia valgyti, kai jie yra visiškai sunokę (turi būti rusvi ir minkšti). Nesubrendę yra beskoniai, kieti. O gerokai peraugę vaisiai surūgsta – užvalgius paraugusių vaisių svaigsta galva, jautiesi kaip girtas.
Koumarja dauginama sėklomis, kurios krinta nuo vaisių ant žemės. paprastai auga saulėtose ar pusiau pavėsingose vietose, visada apsaugotose nuo stipraus vėjo.
